COAR
Here is the weblink for the organization COAR, where our offering from last week is going: http://coarweb.org.
COAR stands for Community Outreach & Advocacy for Refugees. They are a local organization, located in Tempe, AZ that helps refugees help refugees in their efforts to rebuild positive, self-sufficient lives by mobilizing community networks and resources that help refugees adjust to their new surrounding and promote their future success. Since its inception, COAR has served over 600 refugee individuals and worked with nearly 170 volunteers.
From the website:
I found out about COAR from a presentation last semester, by the two guys who designed the logos and pamphlets. If you are from the Phoenix area and live there during the winter and summer breaks, and care about these issues, it is very easy to get involved with their mission by volunteering!
Our past MDG projects have included:
Heifer International Water buffaloes and other beasts of burden to help communities in Asia
Shevet Achim Live-saving heart surgery for Iraqi and Palestinian children
Doctors Without Borders The money we raised for DWB went toward livesaving antibiotics
A small group of committed people can really make a difference!

COAR’s work is mainly concentrated in its three programs. The oldest program, the Volunteer Anchor Program, recruits and trains volunteers to provide individualized mentorship to recently resettled refugee families. A second program, the Awareness and Advocacy Program is focused on informing the public about the refugee issues both locally and at a global level. Our third and newest program, the Reaching Higher! College Prep Program, helps refugee youth in preparing for higher education through individualized mentorship.
